Curriculum Rationale

‘What do we want for our children and how will we work together to achieve this?’ Education Scotland, 2023

It is important to ensure that everyone within the school is clear about what they are aiming to achieve through the curriculum, which is the totality of a child’s experiences.

Therefore, we have a Curriculum Rationale poster and supporting text.

Here at Coldstream Primary School and ELC we have worked hard to ensure we have a curriculum that is engaging, appropriate and challenging. Through our Curriculum we are aiming to:

• Raise attainment and progress.
• Ensure equity.
• Respond to Children’s Voice.
• Ensure high quality teaching and learning.
• Ensure an enriched curriculum experience.

We aim to reflect the school’s unique context while reflecting the SBC Way. We continue to build extensive links with the wider community and hold Coldstream community at the heart of our learning.

Our school values of Ready, Respectful and Safe form the bridge for our children, with our vision of “Nulli Secundus” running throughout. The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) is an important, legally binding agreement which outlines the fundamental rights of every child.

The articles that we have chosen to focus on are in the top left of our poster. The SBC Way Learning, Teaching and Assessment Framework outlines key principles recognised to be essential for excellent learning. It aims to support schools and settings across The Scottish Borders to develop learning, teaching and assessment guidance aligned to these principles whilst retaining local flexibility.

In the top right-hand corner are challenge, creativity, collaboration, consistency and clarity.

These underpin the curriculum experience of every child in our setting.

Lastly dancing in the water of the silvery Tweed are our fish. They are swimming in waters of confident individuals, effective contributors, successful and responsible learners. The key elements of curriculum design run throughout our water. It is hoped through the visual and the text, there is a shared understanding of our ethos, our learning and our shared experiences here at Coldstream Primary School.
